Marijuana Sales in the US Break All Records During Coronavirus

During the quarantine, Americans are consuming more weed than ever, so much so that legal cannabis sales reached a new all-time high in March 2020. This is what the economic daily Bloomberg reveals, according to which marijuana sales have reached dizzying increases over the past month, up to 64% on a weekly basis.

Data also confirmed by a survey that revealed how the number of Americans who declared having consumed marijuana at least once during the month of March stood at 12.8% , also a record compared to the previous one of 12.5%.

The first official data coming from the states confirm the trend: during the coronavirus emergency, Americans are turning to cannabis to fill their days at home and probably to try to overcome the anxieties caused by a worrying work situation.

In Oregon , cannabis sales in March amounted to $84.5 million , a whopping 38% more than the $61.2 million the industry generated in the same period in 2019. Interestingly, alcohol sales also increased significantly, albeit at a slower rate than weed, recording a +17% on a monthly basis.

Moving from the coast to the deep American Midwest, the data does not change and confirms the validity of the analysis produced by Bloomberg. In Illinois, legalization only came into force on January 1st, and therefore the data is not consolidated. In the state, a rule is in force according to which citizens can leave their homes only for health reasons, work, or to purchase a limited list of essential goods , among which cannabis has also been included. In March 2020, sales reached 38 million dollars, exceeding the 35 million reached in February.
