In Italy it is not a crime to smoke cannabis, but you risk prison if you grow it. The state contracts the monopoly of the production and sale of cannabis to organized crime . It is time to say enough, it is time to disobey. It is time to grow .
On April 20, 2020 (International Marijuana Day) we will launch a great civil disobedience . All together, we will put a seed in a pot. Starting to grow cannabis plants in many homes throughout Italy and collecting in the following days and weeks the adhesions of those who want to join.
#IoColtivo is an initiative promoted by Meglio Legale , Dolce Vita , Associazione Luca Coscioni , Radicali Italiani and open to the participation and support of other associations and individual citizens who believe Italian law needs to be changed.
On December 19, 2019, a ruling by the United Sections of the Court of Cassation established that “minimal-sized cultivation activities carried out in a domestic manner intended for personal use do not constitute a crime.” A statement confirmed by the reasons for that ruling , recently published. #IoColtivo is moving in this direction, to ask Parliament to follow the indications of the highest Court of Justice in criminal matters and to finally decriminalize cultivation for personal use.
Perhaps more than disobedience, #IoColtivo can be defined as an action of civil affirmation . Which could help the Italian justice system to be more fair and rational, and free up resources useful for pursuing more serious crimes and waging a real war on drug trafficking.
How it works
To participate in civil disobedience, you need to go to the website www.iocoltivo.eu and follow the instructions. First of all, you need to be of legal age. Then you need to get a pot and a cannabis seed . Then, starting on April 20, we will all put the seed in the soil together to begin the disobedience. We will grow only one plant each. Participants will be invited to post weekly photos of their sprouts and plants on social media with the hashtag #IoColtivo. And if there are problems? #IoColtivo provides legal assistance for those who participate in the disobedience.
